It was inaugurated in 1856 with the name of “Teatro de Solís”. The first performance was Verdi’s opera Hernani. A great deal of prominent artists from all over the world have acted in this house. Being the most important scenic arts house in Uruguay, Teatro Solís has always played a main role in the cultural life of our people.
It stands on the Buenos Aires Street right next to the Plaza Independencia and very close to the cultural and entertainment district of the Ciudad Vieja. Guided visits are highly recommendable.
