Independence Square
Heritage
Description
In 1836, after having demolished the ruins and colonial fortifications of the city, the Plaza Independencia was laid out.  In 1923 the Artigas statue was placed. Underneath you can visit the Artigas Mausoleum where the remains of the national hero are kept. On the same square we have the old Casa de Gobierno, the Torre Ejecutiva (Presidential offices) as well as the Palacio Salvo, probably the most iconic building in Uruguay.
